🔏 What is a digital signature?

A digital signature is an encrypted, electronic authentication stamp that is placed on digital information such as e-mail messages and other electronic documents. The signature ensures that the information actually belongs to the signer.

🔎 What is it used for?

The digital signature thus ensures identification of the signer, but also that the content has not been changed or tampered with after it was digitally signed. In addition, the signature proves the origin of the signed content, so that the person who signed cannot deny knowledge of the document.

In short, the digital signature makes it easier to trust that it is the right person who has signed, and that the document has not been forged or changed without authorization.

🤔 So what about e-signature?

You have probably seen the terms digital signature and electronic signature used interchangeably, when it is actually an electronic signature (or e-signature).

The e-signature is the actual signature executed by a person on a PC, tablet or mobile phone. The digital signature, as described above, ensures the authenticity of the executed signature, and is often used in the implementation of an electronic signature, but it is important to emphasize that the two terms mean different things.

Electronic signatures have legal significance in several countries, in the same way as manual signing on paper. This includes (but is not limited to) the EU, as well as Canada, South Africa, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, the USA, etc.

Electronic signatures are valid in Norway according to EU regulations, through the EEA agreement. eIDAS ensures mutual validity between EU/EEA countries.
